Want to Keep Christ in Christmas?

Want to Keep Christ in Christmas?

I was late getting the kids from their dance class.

Both my kids take dance with my their best friends.

While I was late picking them up, I wasn't that late. I watched my son walk his friend to her dad's car while I waited for the traffic to clear. My daughter and her friend were still getting their shoes and coats on.

I parked in front, leaving the car running while I ran in to get them. My son waited in the car. NPR was on full blast as I ushered the girls in the backseat. As I climbed into the driver's seat my daughter exclaimed, "GUYS! Trump JUST brought back Christmas!"

Her enthusiasm for this news was astounding.

My son looked at me in disbelief. I laughed. And, reminded them that Christmas is all around.

Christmas is all around

This was not enough for my son. I began a rant about why the claim of bringing Christmas back was stupid but refrained. Instead, I started listing three other holidays that are also in December. I asked if he thought these should be included in public festivities. Of course, he said yes.

That was sort of a trick question for him. He knows what it's like to feel left out and wants others to feel included.

I'm one of those people who insist on a "Merry Christmas" card. But, everyone I send a card to also celebrates Christmas. Outside of a greeting card, I try to include all faiths when decorating the office and greeting people. It's the Christian thing to do.

The idea of not including anyone for any reason seems to go against Christian values. The hate that is being spread in Christ's name is sickening. As a Catholic, I am embarrassed. I've also struggled with wanting to be part of a community that would support this type of malice.

And, then I look to my kids. They want to help others. They look forward to volunteering with me. They are kind to others, most of the time. I want to be more like them.

I stumbled upon the perfect quote to summarize my thoughts.

Want to Keep Christ in Christmas? (quote)

Want to keep Christ in Christmas? Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, forgive the guilty, welcome the unwanted, care for the ill, love your enemies, and do unto others as you would have done unto you. - Steve Maraboli

My mantra for this year has been, "lead by example." I am so far from perfect, but that's the point. We are not meant to be perfect. If we were there would be no need for reconciliation. But, that's not an excuse to not be the best person I can be. My kids are watching me. I don't want them to grow up to be dumbasses.

Where do you stand? Is Christmas finally back?
