You know those people who are always smiling. Those generally happy people who have a light in their eyes. Those people who can't help but smile even when the world is crumbling around their feet.
I am not that person.
I've been trying to be that person.
I made a conscious decision to smile. A genuine smile followed by a greeting of some sort to strangers. I especially like to smile at those with a scowl on their face.
Reactions to my greetings ranged from surprise to confusion. But, most have been positive when they realized I was still smiling.
One day a dingy, strung out looking man was sitting outside of the laundromat as I was unloading my car. Annoyed with his nearness, I remembered that I was going to smile at people. So, I greeted him with a smile and a cheery, "Hello! How are ya'?"
As I unloaded my car, he grabbed my hand and thanked me. Crying, he told me that I was the first person in a long time that took notice of him.
I'm trying to be that person, all of the time.
