Winter has hit Northeast Ohio! And, what pairs better with cold weather than chili!
Did you know that the third Thursday in February is National Chili Day? The month of October is dedicated to the spicy stew of peppers.
fun fact: Texas-style chili doesn’t contain beans; vegetarian chili (aka chili sin carne) typically replaces meat with corn and other vegetables; chili verde uses pork, tomatillos, and green chili peppers in lieu of beef and tomatoes; and white chili uses white beans and chicken or turkey.
Eleven years ago, I kicked off an annual chili cook-off at my office. Some years we use it as a fundraiser, other years we just enjoyed the social aspect of competing. Regardless of why we do it or how many chilis we have, our cook-off is a success every year.
7 Tips for Hosting the Best Chili Cook-off Ever

1. A plan
The number one thing I've learned is to have a plan and stay organized! I guess that's two things, but they are essential as peppers to the success of your cook-off.
Utilizing a checklist helps even if your checklist is post-its all over your desk. Of course, if that's not your style, I created a checklist! And, it matches the style of invites, tags, certificates, and scorecards I've created.
2. Power
Multiple crockpots mean multiple outlets. Surge protectors are best to deal with various crock pots and the wattage the pot would need.
3. Paper and pencils
Scorecards help judges figure out how much and why the like the chilis that are in the competition. Plus it feels more official. That said, good old fashion popular vote works, too!
4. Prizes or certificates
It's a competition! You need to have prizes or certificates to declare a winner. (free printables!)
5. Condiments and toppings
Crackers, sour cream, cheese, and whatever else you think your guests would like to have with a bowl of chili. Don't leave it up to your guests to provide them unless you ask them to bring it.
6. Antacids
Lots of antacids and maybe some heartburn medicine to be on the safe side.
7. Time
It takes time to taste several chilis. Don't rush things by having a small window of time for guests to eat, drink, and mingle. Having it during an event like a football game or basketball game is a fun way to bring people together!
And, don't forget to have fun yourself! Having a chili cook-off should free up time for you to have a great time. You don't have to plan and make a meal for your guests.
