Have You Read These? Three Books I Read Last Month

Have you read these, yet? Book review for Still Lives, The Immortalists, and Children of Blood and Bone

As I looked over the list of books that I've read so far this year, I realized that two should not be there. Even though this is just for me - I had to take them off. Not really challenging myself if I cheat. Right?

While I'm down two books from my goal (24 books) this year, I'm still ahead by five books. This means that if or when my reading kick ends, I may have reached my goal!

And, I am ahead of posting a summary for this month! Woohoo!

#ReadingList Recommendations for May | Still Lives, The Immortalists, and Children of Blood and Bone

The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin

The Immortalists reads like a suspense thriller mixed with a healthy dose of drama. Four siblings ranging in ages of 13 to seven years old go to a gypsy to find out the exact day they will die.  Each chapter is a different sibling and their story.

It's heartbreaking how the siblings are torn apart by fear, pride, and superstition. But, there is hope. This book almost made me want to call my siblings. How could our lives be different if we talked more and tried harder?

This was picked for a book club. And, I enjoyed this even more after discussing it with the group.

Children of Blood and Bone (Legacy of Orisha) by Tomi Adeyemi

Tomi Adeyemi weaves a world that sucks you in from the very first paragraph and haunts you after you've finished. Magic and revolution are at the heart of the book. Driven by two strong women, they go on a quest to take back their lives and country from the ruling tyrant. The effects of class, family, and power are interwoven making this fast-paced story hard to put down.

This is hands down my favorite book of the year. I've heard Children of Blood and Bone described as the Harry Potter of this generation, but it's so much more. This an adult-ish version that is beautifully written, engaging, and well imagined. I get why adults read YA!

Still Lives: A Novel by Maria Hummel

Still Lives follows a heartbroken, former journalist major turned copy editor as she uncovers what happened to an artist when she doesn't show to her art show opening.

Maria Hummel balances the past experience of the amateur investigator with her current emotional state to tell an exciting story.
