Well into my adulthood, my mom still made Christmas stockings for us. Those stockings weren't always hanging on her mantel. Some years she brought them with her when visiting our homes and later, hanging in her nursing room.
I'll never forget the first year she gave one to my husband. At the time, he was just a friend. She gave him a stocking anyway. He was delighted to find toothpaste, shaving cream, and some other novelty items. It was one of the many fond memories he shares about her. Especially how she saved him from going out to get those necessities.

Remember when your parents threated that you'd get coal? Well, maybe that was just ours. You can find coal made of chocolate, but reindeer poop seems funnier.
