4 Ways to Save Energy and Money with Ohio Direct Energy

Save with Direct Energy Plan and More

Instead of doing a New Year's resolution list, I'm going with just one word. My word for this year is goals.

One of my many goals this year is to try and cut back on expenses, spending, and pretty much anything that will increase our savings.

I would like to be one of those people who is really good at remembering to turn things off and unplug other things, but I haven't been. At least, I wasn't until I started doing research on Direct Energy.

Direct Energy has special offers in OH the month of January!

Ohio - Save up to 14%* over DP&L’s electricity rate, and up to 10%* over Duke Energy’s electricity rate. There’s more! Save up to *5% over The Illuminating Company’s electricity rate, and up to 3%* over Ohio Edison’s electricity rate!

It's amazing what you can save by making simple changes. The thing is, I'm not going to write a list of a hundred things to do when I know I won't do them myself.  So, I searched for four of the easiest things I would be able to do this year. Next year, I'll add four more, but this is a good start.

First and foremost, shop around for the best electricity rates and start with Direct Energy. After you've done that try:

4 Easy Tips to Save Energy and Money this January

1. Clean

I should have done this sooner, but it's not too late! Cleaning the coils on the fridge and replacing filters on the furnace help reduce the energy it takes to run these appliances. They even sell alarms when the filters on the furnace get too dirty.

2. Turn off the lights

I can hear my dad yelling at me right now! "Turn off the damn lights!"

When I had my first apartment, I left all the lights on, all of the time just because I could do it. Since it was a small apartment, it really didn't matter. Now that I live in a house with three other people, it matters!

3. Turn off and unplug appliances when not in use

I have no idea why my hair dryer is plugged in, I can't even tell you the last time I used it. It is now in a drawer in our linen closet. I've also plugged all of the chargers into a power strip and turn the strip off when none of the devices is plugged in to be charged. I've also looked to the kitchen for what can be unplugged. Not only did I unplugged those appliances we don't use regularly but, I put them away. We have a lot more counter space.

4. Cover windows

The house we rent has single pane windows plus storm windows, but it just does not feel like it's enough to keep the cold out. We decided to hang plastic this year over the windows and caulk around one of the windows that is leaking cold air in.

In addition, hanging drapes will help to block the cold air from coming in and on a sunny day, we can open the drapes, let some sun in, and close them to keep the warmth trapped in the house.
