5 Podcasts That Could be Your New Favorite

5 podcasts I'm listening to right now and you should to

My working days look like this, drive kids to school, drive to work, work, drive home, family stuff, write, sleep. While listening to music does play a part in my day, podcasts have taken over.

While I make lunches, I listed to Alexa's Flash Briefing, in the car - anything that makes me cry, and at work mostly news but also indulgent podcasts.

My indulgent podcasts include Doctor Who recaps and discussions as well as the Good Place and The Wiccan Read-Along. Listens that have a narrow-ish fan base. The podcasts that I am sharing not so specific - sort of. And, they are all presented by women! I didn't plan that but since we are heading into Women's March weekend, bonus!

By the Book

A post shared by By The Book Podcast (@bythebookpod) on

Jolenta is a contributor to the BBC, WNYC, and Risk! She's also a Moth story slam winner. You've probably heard her funny stories on a podcast before. Kristen is a producer with Panoply and former co-host of PRI/WNYC’s Movie Date podcast where, no surprise, her job was to be critical.

Jolenta Greenberg and Kristen Meinzer live by a self-help book and share how it went in By the Book. Episodes are divided into how it went, which is about a 40-minute episode. Followed by an epilogue about 30-minutes long telling listeners how it went two weeks after the book and if they are still living by the book.

I adore these ladies! The banter they share, how comfortable they are sharing their lives with one another and us, and the books! Books that I always say I want to read but would rather read anything else.

The most recent book, Pick Three: You Can Have It All (Just Not Every Day) by Randi Zuckerberg, saved me from having to read it but inspired me to follow the pick three premises in the most basic way possible. And, it's helped me stay on track this week. Again, did not read the book, just like the concept.

Sip on This

Comedy writer Ashley Nicole Black (Full Frontal with Samantha Bee) brings her popular DAME advice column, "Sip On This," to life, pulling in amazing guest co-hosts like Ijeoma Oluo, Samantha Bee, Rebecca Traister and more to answer listeners' questions.

I started listening to Sip on This when she interviewed Samantha Bee and I've been hooked ever since. Interviews are warm, engaging, and heartfelt. She interviews women who inspire to change me and the world we live in.

The last episode features Robin Thede answering questions on freelancing and being the boss. What I heard was set boundaries and don't take on other's problems. This is the best advice for any stage of your life and career. Also, the best advice for getting beyond other blogger envy and jealousy. They are discussing auditions but I can absolutely relate. Rejection is a daily thing for those who blog. I'm going through a phase of rebuilding my brand. I didn't get a job that I had gotten in the past. I know why, but that doesn't mean it didn't sting. Changing my way of thinking and doing will only help me.

The first season is over so it's the perfect time to binge listen.

My Best Break Up

Sometimes, the best beginnings start with an ending. My Best Break-Up is hosted by the charming comedian, Maeve Higgins, and features a different break-up story each week.

It took me seven years to break up with a guy once.

I guess you could call it an on-again-off-again relationship. It was really a seven-year one night stand. Now that I'm married, I'm pretty certain I won't have to deal with that again but that didn't stop me from breaking off bad relationships. I just didn't realize that they were actual break-ups until Maeve Higgins sort of told me so in My Best Break-up!

My Best Break-up is the new series from Hello Sunshine. Stories from typical break-ups to breaking up with dieting are shared. Bright and happy, even when the topics aren't.

Cafeteria Christian

Nora and Natalia met on the internet and quickly formed a mutual admiration society which grew into a friendship and many conversations about life and loss and faith and God. They knew there was a place in the current cultural and political climate for a kind of Christianity that was not “THAT kind of Christian”. So Cafeteria Christian was born. They are reclaiming this pejorative for good and reminding people that even when it comes to Christianity and faith, you can take what you like and leave the rest.

As a Catholic who has identified as a cafeteria Catholic and struggles with many, many of the teachings - Cafeteria Christain is a beacon of light.

I find it funny that Christians feel persecuted. Never have I ever felt that way. What I have felt is an embarrassment at belonging to the Church, lost because I don't feel a connection with the men in charge, and for the most part annoyed.

I discovered this post cast because of Nora McInerny's Terrible, Thanks for Asking podcast. This is the podcast that forced me to listen to podcasts in my car because I cried at my desk listening to it. She along with Natalia Terfa, a Lutheran pastor, discuss Christianity. The better parts of following God and being part of a community.

If being Catholic was not so ingrained in my soul, I would convert to being Lutheran. As long as the church I join has a female pastor like Natalia.

Cafeteria Christian has brought me back to conversations with God. And, a little less embarrassed of being Christian.

Serial

Serial is a podcast from the creators of This American Life, hosted by Sarah Koenig. Serial tells one story — a true story — over the course of a season. Serial has won every major award for broadcasting, including the duPont-Columbia, Scripps Howard, Edward R. Murrow, and the first-ever Peabody awarded to a podcast. Serial, like This American Life, is produced in collaboration with WBEZ Chicago. It comes from Serial Productions, which released S-Town in 2017, and has more projects in development.

I started listening to season one, episode one of Serial and then skipped to season three since the series covered Cleveland.

Listening to Serial made me angry and sad and then angry again. I am horrified at the criminal system, bad cops, and especially the judicial system. And, I am mortified that there seems to be nothing to do about it. Except, share the podcast, call my elected officials, and vote.

I am working on season one now.
